How to Clean Up Photos Before Posting to Instagram

Make your Instagram photos look cleaner: remove distractions, strangers and clutter with an AI eraser on iPhone, plus a quick pre-posting checklist.

By Ayoub Farid · · 2 min read

The difference between a nice photo and a scroll-stopping one is often what's not in it. A bin in the corner, a stranger's arm, a tangle of cables — small distractions pull the eye away from your subject. Cleaning them up takes a minute and makes your feed look more intentional.

The pre-post checklist

Before posting, look at the photo on full screen and check:

  1. Edges of the frame — half-visible people, cars, poles.
  2. Background — signs, bins, bags, scaffolding.
  3. Surfaces — phones, cups, receipts, crumbs on tables.
  4. Lines — power lines, cables, ropes.
  5. Shadows — your own shadow in the foreground.

A quick workflow for a whole photo dump

Carousel posts and photo dumps mean editing many photos at once. Keep it fast:

  1. Pick first, edit second. Choose the final 5–10 photos before touching any of them.
  2. Fix the hero photo first — the first slide gets the most attention.
  3. Remove only what pulls the eye. On small screens, distant details rarely matter.
  4. Batch the same edit. If several photos have the same sign or bin in them, erase it in each in one sitting so the set looks consistent.
  5. Check on a small preview. Look at the photo at thumbnail size — that's how most people will first see it.

This keeps editing to a few minutes even for a big post.
