How to Change Your Profile Picture Background on iPhone
Make a standout profile picture: remove the background with AI on iPhone and swap it for a clean color, for LinkedIn, social media and work chats.

Your profile picture is tiny and seen everywhere — LinkedIn, Slack, WhatsApp, dating apps, social media. A busy background makes it hard to read. A clean, colored background makes you pop at any size.
Step 1: Take a good portrait
- Face a window for soft, even light.
- Shoot at eye level, slightly above at most.
- Leave space above your head so the crop works.
- Use portrait or 1× lens, not ultra-wide, to avoid distortion.
- Wear a color that contrasts with the background you plan to use.
Step 2: Remove the background
- Open Erase Spark and choose Remove Background.
- Select your portrait.
- The AI separates you from the background.
- Save the cut-out.

Step 3: Pick a background color
Place your cut-out on a solid color in any design app:
| Platform | Good choice |
|---|---|
| LinkedIn, work tools | Soft grey, navy, light blue |
| Personal brand | Your brand color |
| Social media | Bold color that contrasts with your outfit |
| Dating apps | Usually better: a natural, real background |
Then crop to a square with your face in the upper middle — most platforms show profile pictures as circles.
Alternative: just clean up the original
Sometimes a natural background looks friendlier. Instead of replacing it, use Remove Object to erase distractions behind you — a stranger, a sign, clutter. See remove clutter from photos.
Consistency across platforms
Use the same picture everywhere so people recognize you. A consistent background color helps too.
Common profile picture mistakes
- Too far away. Your face should fill roughly half the frame; full-body shots become unreadable as small circles.
- Busy patterns behind you or on your clothes compete with your face.
- Harsh overhead light creates shadows under the eyes — face a window instead.
- Heavy filters make you hard to recognize in real life or on video calls.
- Group photo crops with someone's shoulder still visible look careless; erase it or choose another photo.
Fixing these before you remove the background gives a much cleaner final result.

Frequently asked questions
How do I change the background of my profile picture?
Remove the background with an app like Erase Spark, then place your cut-out on a solid color and crop it square.
What is the best background color for a LinkedIn photo?
Neutral, calm colors like soft grey, navy or light blue work well and look professional.
Why does my hair look cut off after removing the background?
Fine hair is hard to separate. Shoot with good light against a plain, contrasting background for cleaner edges.
Should my profile picture background be plain?
