Real Estate Photo Cleanup: Declutter Listing Photos Honestly

Declutter real estate and rental listing photos on iPhone: remove bins, cars, cables and personal items with AI, and the edits you should never make.

By Ayoub Farid · · 2 min read

Whether you're listing a home for sale, a room for rent or a holiday apartment, photos do most of the selling. Tidy, bright rooms get more clicks. A bit of AI cleanup helps — as long as it stays honest.

Shoot it right first

  • Open curtains and turn on all lights.
  • Shoot from the corner at chest height to show the most space.
  • Keep verticals straight — hold the phone level.
  • Tidy before you shoot — editing is for what you missed.

What's fine to remove

These are temporary items, not part of the property:

ItemWhere
Bins and recycling boxesKitchen, front of house
Cables, chargers, remotesLiving room, bedrooms
Toiletries and towelsBathroom
Personal photos, papers, mailEverywhere
Parked cars in front of the houseExterior
Toys, shoes, bagsHallways, floors

What you must not remove

  • Cracks, damp patches, stains or damage
  • Power lines, masts or buildings next to the property
  • Permanent fixtures that buyers would care about
  • Anything that changes the size, layout or view

Many listing platforms and real-estate rules prohibit misleading images, and buyers will see the truth at the viewing. More in our guide to photo editing ethics.

Guides for specific items: remove clutter, remove cars, remove reflections in windows and mirrors.

Staging with AI replace?

AI replace can add a plant or a lamp to an empty corner. If you stage virtually, say so in the listing — "virtually staged" — so viewers aren't surprised.

Frequently asked questions

Can I remove clutter from real estate photos?

Yes. Removing temporary items like bins, cables and personal belongings is common and helps rooms look tidy.

Light cleanup is generally accepted, but hiding defects or permanent features can mislead buyers and may break local rules or platform policies.

Should I disclose virtual staging?

Yes. Label virtually staged photos so buyers and renters know the furniture isn't real.

How do I remove a car from in front of a house?

Brush over the car and its shadow with an AI eraser, then check the driveway and curb lines.
