Text pulls the eye. A shop sign in the background, a date stamp from an old camera, a price sticker on a product, graffiti on a wall — your attention goes straight to it. Removing text from your own photos is one of the most satisfying edits, and with an AI eraser it takes seconds.

A quick note: only remove text from photos you own or have rights to. Removing watermarks or credits from other people's images can break copyright law and platform rules.

What you can remove

  • Date stamps on scanned or digital photos
  • Signs, posters and shop names in the background
  • Price tags and stickers on products
  • Writing on whiteboards or papers in the frame
  • Graffiti and tags on walls
  • Number plates in photos you want to share publicly

How to remove text with Erase Spark

1. Open Remove Object

Open Erase Spark, tap Remove Object and choose your photo.

2. Paint over the text block

Cover the whole block of letters plus a small margin. For a sign, decide whether to remove just the letters or the entire sign — often removing the whole sign looks more natural than leaving a blank board.

3. Erase and compare

Tap Erase. Use the before/after slider to check for leftover letter fragments.

4. Clean up fragments

Brush any remaining marks and erase again.

Tips for clean results

  • Simple backgrounds win. Text on a plain wall, sky or fabric disappears cleanly.
  • Text on patterns is harder. On brick or tiles, the AI has to continue the pattern — erase in smaller chunks.
  • Long text lines: split them into two or three passes.
  • Replace instead of erase. A blank sign can look odd. Try replacing it with AI — for example, "a plain wooden board" or "a green plant".

Date stamps on old photos

Date stamps usually sit in a corner over a fairly simple area. Brush the digits with a small brush and erase. If the stamp crosses a face or detailed object, expect to try a couple of times.

Try it on your own photos

Erase Spark removes text, signs and stickers with the same simple brush. Free to download on iPhone and iPad.

Frequently asked questions

How do I remove writing from a picture on iPhone?

Open an AI eraser app such as Erase Spark, brush over the writing and tap Erase. The background behind the text is rebuilt automatically.

Can I remove a date stamp from an old photo?

Yes. Brush over the digits with a small brush and erase. It works best when the stamp sits over a simple area.

Removing watermarks from images you don't own can violate copyright. Only edit text on photos you took or have permission to edit.

Why do letter fragments remain?

The brush didn't cover the edges of the letters. Paint those fragments again with a small margin and erase.
